A Helmet-Mounted Pedestrian Dead Reckoning System
نویسنده
چکیده
Since most persons in emergency service wear some sort of headgear, we investigate how basic navigation sensors could be incorporated into a safety helmet and thereby be made truly wearable. It is well known that the key to solving the generic ubiquitous localization problem is the combination of different positioning techniques and sensor modalities. In this paper, a combined approach of pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) and GPS positioning is followed. An novel combination of neural-network step length predictions and helmet-mounted sensors is presented. The experimental system shows low accumulated error over an extended walk and indoor/outdoor navigation is demonstrated.

Some prior studies proposed the use of Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) for indoor localization, in which a small number of inertial sensors are put on the pedestrian. These sensors (such as a G-sensor and gyroscope) are used to estimate the distance and direction that a user travels. The effectiveness of a PDR system lies in its success in accurately estimating the user’s moving distance and di...

In this paper, a novel method of sensor based pedestrian dead reckoning is presented using sensors mounted on a shoe. Sensor based systems are a practical alternative to global navigation satellite systems when positioning accuracy is degraded such as in thick forest, urban areas with tall buildings and indoors. Using miniature, inexpensive sensors it is possible to create self-contained system...

The body-mounted inertial systems for pedestrian navigation do not require any preinstalled facilities and can run autonomously. The advantages over other technologies make it especially attractive for the applications such as first responders, military and consumer markets. The hardware platform integrating the low-cost, low-power and small-size MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) inertial...
متن کاملPedestrian Dead Reckoning for Person Localization in a Wireless Sensor Network
Localization in areas where no global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are available is still a challenging task. For pedestrian navigation this is especially interesting because this problem is faced more often than in other scenarios like car navigation. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are one approach to indoor localization and allow an easy setup in ad-hoc scenarios. However, for networks...
متن کاملEnhancing Indoor Inertial Pedestrian Navigation Using a Shoe-Worn Marker
We propose a novel hybrid inertial sensors-based indoor pedestrian dead reckoning system, aided by computer vision-derived position measurements. In contrast to prior vision-based or vision-aided solutions, where environmental markers were used-either deployed in known positions or extracted directly from it-we use a shoe-fixed marker, which serves as positional reference to an opposite shoe-mo...
